Denuding Pipette

A denuding pipette is a specialized tool used in assisted reproductive technologies, particularly in in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) procedures. Its primary function is to remove the surrounding cumulus cells from the oocyte (egg) after it has been retrieved from the ovary. This process is called denudation.

Key Features and Usage of a Denuding Pipette:

  1. Structure: It is a very fine, narrow glass or plastic pipette with a specific diameter that allows for the gentle aspiration of cells. The pipette’s size is carefully chosen to fit the oocyte without causing damage.

  2. Denudation Process:

    • After an egg retrieval procedure, the oocytes are surrounded by cumulus cells.
    • The denuding pipette is used to remove these cumulus cells by carefully aspirating and releasing the egg in and out of the pipette in a controlled manner.
    • This step is crucial before ICSI, where a single sperm is injected into the egg, as the removal of these cells allows embryologists to better visualize the oocyte and assess its maturity.
  3. Precision and Control: The use of a denuding pipette requires precision to ensure that the oocyte is not damaged. Different sizes of pipettes may be used depending on the size and maturity of the oocyte.

  4. Applications:

    • ICSI: Denuding is essential in ICSI because the embryologist needs a clear view of the oocyte membrane to successfully inject a sperm cell.
    • Oocyte Assessment: The removal of cumulus cells also helps in grading and selecting the best oocytes for fertilization based on their appearance.

Denuding pipettes come in various sizes (measured in micrometers), allowing for the handling of eggs and embryos with high precision.
